  1. Course Description.

The Junior Reserve Officer Training Course (JROTC) is designed to teach high school students / cadets the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility, while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork and self-discipline. This course places cadets in progressive areas of responsibility that will increase their willingness to take on new challenges. This course is cadet driven and is enhanced with strong leadership and teamwork.

Cadets are expected to maintain a 2.0 GPA and perform a minimum of five (5) hours of community service per-semester. Cadets receive academic instruction and participate in adventure training, parades, community activities, competition with other schools in drill and ceremony, and support various school activities. Cadets have the opportunity to attend a one-week camp during the summer (JROTC-Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC)).

JROTC provides cadets with a uniform, which they must wear during designated days and activities. Cadets are responsible for keeping the uniform clean and serviceable. Properly wearing uniforms during designated days and participation, accounts for a total of 30- 50% of the cadet’s grade. Military Uniforms must be returned at the end of the school year or should the student drop the course. Although, this course is Army sponsored and structured, it does not obligate military enlistment. Students are not members of the military.

  2. The goal of JROTC is to teach cadets to:
 
  • Appreciate the ethical values and principles that underline good citizenship.
  • Develop leadership potential, while living and working cooperatively with others.
  • Appreciate the importance of physical fitness and nutrition in maintaining good health.
  • Understand the importance of high school graduation for a successful future, and learn about college and other advanced education and employment opportunities.
  • Become familiar with military history as it relates to America’s culture and understand the history, purpose and structure of the military services.
  • Develop the skills necessary to work effectively as a member of a team.

 

  1. Curriculum.

This curriculum is designed to support Santiago High School and JROTC’s mission and goals. The JROTC’s curriculum is based on seven units of Instructions, which include:

  • Citizenship in Action
  • Leadership Theory and Application
  • Foundations for Success
  • Wellness, Fitness, and First Aid
  • Geography, Map Skills and Environmental Awareness
  • Citizenship in History and Government
  • Cadet Safety and Civilian Marksmanship Program (Optional)

The course length is normally four years at a traditional high school. JROTC is divided into four Leadership Educational Training (LET) levels. Each LET level equal one year in the program (LET-I to LET-IV).

  1. Credit.
Cadets earned ten (10) credits per school year or LET level in JROTC. These credits are in Physical Education (PE) or Elective credits if the cadet has completed the PE requirements (2 years).
