(new: p.1182): "Long story told in elevated language (usually poetry), which relates the great deeds of a larger-than-life hero who embodies the values of a particular society. Most epics include elements of myth, legend, folk tale, and history.  Their tone is serious and their language is grand.  Most epic heroes undertake quests to achieve something of tremendous value to themselves or their people.  Often parts of the hero's quest are set in both heaven and hell."  bullet and paraphrase traits of an epic: lengthy, formal high-level diction, narrative, poem, adventures of a hero, shows what values ancient Greeks valued.   FRAME: Due to the fact that "quote/textual evidence" (cite lines), it is categorized as an epic because ....  Because (of), So, As a result of, Therefore, If... then, The cause was, Consequently, thus, Due to, This led to (caused).  Do not say, "This is an epic because on page 959 it says 'The Epic Continues'."
